Snapshot of
Research

Through primary and secondary research, we calculated the average waste outputs of a festival of 10,000 patrons scale.

Quantifying this waste helped us triage priorities within the detail of the circular festival model. Here is a snapshot of what we found:

570,000

sheets of toilet paper used per day

40,000

if individual water bottles distributed per day (30,000 litres water)

5,000kg

sewage waste created per day

360,000

litres of water would be used for flushing toilets, per day

2,700

litres of water used to make 1 cotton
t-shirt for a merch stall

1,080+ tonnes

 average Co2 emissions from
artist + crew transport

575 tonnes

average Co2 emissions for patrons to travel to and from festival site

1,300+ tonnes

average Co2 emissions from
supplier transport

30,000,000

predicted litres of water used in production
of food at the festival (1 meal approximately 3,000)

400,000

predicted carbon footprint of food
(production only, excluding transport, cooking etc.) at a festival

We would like to acknowledge the festivals who are committed to circularity by 2025 under the Greener festivals deal. These festivals have been pivotal in our research and are precedents for large scale festivals adopting eco-concious practices.
